Wavefront-based Metrology with Phase Shifting Schlieren (PSS)

HOW IT WORKS

NIMO TR0815 uses Lambda-X’s proprietary Phase Shifting Schlieren (PSS) technology to measure the full optical performance of intraocular lenses (IOLs). Instead of relying on laser interferometry, PSS captures a series of phase-shifted images as light passes through the IOL. These images are then processed by advanced algorithms to reconstruct the lens’s wavefront with high precision.

The system is composed of three integrated components:

• a stable illumination source and optical mask (Schlieren filter)
• the phase-shifting module
• high-resolution imaging optics and camera

Together, these enable the acquisition of phase-shifted intensity patterns that are combined into a full wavefront map — providing detailed insights into imaging quality, optical design characteristics, and manufacturing precision.

Why Phase Shifting Schlieren Makes the Difference!

Conventional IOL metrology systems, such as Shack–Hartmann sensors, face limitations in alignment sensitivity, range, and dimensionality.

Phase Shifting Schlieren (PSS) captures phase-shifted intensity patterns and reconstructs the full wavefront of the IOL. The result is 3D, quantitative data that conventional methods cannot achieve -combining precision, robustness, and speed in a single technology:

• Wide dynamic range (±100 D): Suitable for all refractive IOL designs

• Insensitive to positioning: Accurate, operator-independent measurements

• High repeatability (≤0.01 D): Consistent results across R&D and production

• No moving parts: Robust design, stable over time, minimal maintenance

• Fast measurement cycle: Complete IOL characterization in 4–10 seconds

• Full 3D wavefront characterization: Unlike other systems that measure only in X–Y, PSS reconstructs across X, Y, and Z axes for true three-dimensional insight

Phase Shifting Schlieren is a patented Lambda-X Ophthalmics innovation (Patents: WO03/048837, US2005/0036153A1).

Custom detection patterns can be configured and saved using a dedicated interface. Parameters such as threshold, angle range, and minimum mark spacing are adjustable to ensure robust performance across various lens types.

Automated Detection: Identifies toric lens engravings with predefined patterns, reducing manual errors.

Axis Computation: Measures the alignment error between toric marks and the actual lens axis.

Flexible Modes: Supports Auto, Manual, and None detection methods to fit different workflows.

Pattern Management: Allows creation and storage of custom detection patterns.

Extended Depth of Focus (EDoF)

The EDoF plugin provides two complementary evaluation modes – Peak + Addition and Depth of Focus (DoF) – to assess lens performance across a range of focal points. It is particularly useful for analyzing complex designs such as multifocal and EDoF IOLs.

Peak + Addition Measurement: Evaluates MTF at a chosen addition point and visualizes the integrated optical quality over that zone.

Depth of Focus (DoF) Measurement: Quantifies the optical range where contrast remains above a user-defined MTF threshold.

Custom Parameters: Supports configurable inputs such as addition value, spatial frequency, and peak selection (far/intermediate/near).

Enhanced Visualization: Displays shaded MTF curve zones and markers for intuitive interpretation of depth performance.

Decentration Analysis

The Decentration Analysis plugin measures and verifies the alignment between the optical and geometrical centers of an IOL. It ensures that the optics are properly centered relative to the lens body, helping to guarantee lens quality and compliance in production.

Center-to-Center Verification: Detects offset between optical and geometrical centers with high precision.

Quality Assurance: Ensures lenses meet alignment specifications for both R&D and manufacturing.

Operator-Independent: Automated detection reduces variability and improves repeatability.

Improved Traceability: Results can be stored and compared across batches for robust process control.

Multi-focus

The Multi-focus plugin enhances through-focus analysis by detecting multiple focal points in intraocular lenses (IOLs). This enables evaluation of bifocal and trifocal designs beyond the single focus detected in the base software.

Extended Detection: Identifies up to two additional foci (for trifocal lenses) from through-focus MTF curves.

Accurate Performance Mapping: Provides detailed information on optical quality across multiple addition points.

Advanced Lens Analysis: Supports assessment of complex IOL designs, including multifocal and trifocal configurations.

ISO2 Model Eye

The ISO2 model eye plugin enables standardized evaluation of IOLs by applying controlled levels of spherical aberration, as defined by the ISO 11979-2 recommendations. This provides a consistent and reliable reference environment for assessing lens performance.

Configurable Aberrations: Choose from predefined ISO2 spherical aberrations (0.00 μm, 0.10 μm, 0.16 μm, 0.20 μm, 0.28 μm) or freely set values up to 0.45 μm for advanced testing.

Standardized Evaluation: Ensures results align with ISO2 requirements, supporting consistent comparisons across different IOL designs.

Flexible Processing Modes: Available in both paraxial and non-paraxial processing, allowing realistic testing conditions.

Enhanced Analysis: Provides a reliable basis for comparing lens performance under controlled optical conditions.

Phakic Model Eye

The Phakic Model Eye plugin extends the synthetic model eye by including a crystalline lens, enabling realistic testing of phakic IOLs. It provides a controlled environment for evaluating lens performance while maintaining compatibility with the standard model eye (cornea).

Realistic Simulation: Incorporates both a crystalline lens and phakic IOL for accurate optical modeling.

Flexible Configuration: Can be combined with the standard model eye (cornea) for comprehensive testing setups.

Standardized Evaluation: Provides a reproducible environment for consistent comparison of phakic IOL designs.

Extended Applications: Supports research and development of phakic IOLs alongside conventional IOL metrology.

9th Order Polynomial Correction

The plugin allows refined post-processing of power results using a 9th-order polynomial. It expands on the default 4th-order correction in IOL-Mentor to better align reported values with reference standards. While it does not alter the measured curve itself, it applies a correction to the reported power values in the Results section. This is useful for calibration and traceability when higher-order deviations are present in the system.

Extended Correction Range: Applies a polynomial fit up to the 9th degree to handle complex deviations.

Custom Coefficients: Supports individual input for each coefficient (A0 to A9) to match calibration needs.

Improved Result Accuracy: Refines displayed power values to better match actual lens behavior.

Standards Compliance: Supports precise reporting in line with internal or external QA standards.

Active Directory

Registered Windows users can log in with their existing credentials, avoiding duplicate accounts. This integration ensures your security policies and user management are applied automatically, enhancing both security and ease of use.

Production Software Integration API

The IOL-Mentor API enables full integration with the production and quality control environments. It supports remote control of the instrument, automated measurement workflows, real-time data extraction, and secure connectivity with internal and third-party systems.

This makes it ideal for centralized floor management, robotic setups, and custom enterprise software solutions – ensuring scalable and repeatable IOL measurements across the most demanding production lines.

Remote Instrument Control: Configure, calibrate, and operate instruments from your central software – including parameter updates and system references.

Automated Measurement Workflows: Trigger sequences such as optical reference, lens loading, and measurement completion – enabling integration with robotic arms.

Real-Time Data Access: Extract measurement results instantly for QA validation, ERP systems, or production databases.

Template Management: Create and lock measurement templates across instruments and locations – ensuring consistency and speed.

Software Ecosystem Compatibility: Easily integrate with in-house dashboards, LIMS, ERP, and QA systems through the public API. This enables flexible deployment and aligns the instrument with existing digital workflows for efficient production and traceability.
